The Bible quizzers recently returned from ENC where they attended the Eastern Field competition. It began Thursday evening, May 14, with worship and a message from ENC enrollment counselor, Victoria Bolduc.
Friday morning the quizzing began. Maine brought four teams to compete. The Varsity A team consisted of Zach Desrochers, Abby Desrochers, Jesse Plessner and Casey Thayer of Little River Baptist in Belfast, and Aaron Couch of Bowdoinham Nazarene. They faced tough competition in this division, including 3 excellent teams from Virginia, 2 teams from the Mid-Atlantic district, and one from Upstate NY. After coming out of the round robin with a record of 6-2, they went into the play-offs in third. After losing to a VA team they had beat in the round robin, they went on to win over Upstate a second time, and beat the MAD team that had defeated them in the round robin. But after losing again to another VA team, they placed 3rd overall. Great job! Zach came in first individually, and Abby placed 9th.
The Varsity B team was composed of Josh De Lige and Lizzy De Lige of Auburn Nazarene, Nia McCann and Jenny McCann of Brewer Calvary Baptist, Caeli Beecher from Wells Nazarene, and Chris Thayer of Little River Baptist. This team came out of the round robin in first place, but a loss early in the play-offs meant having to climb back up in the ranks. In the final rounds, they found themselves having to win twice against a strong Pittsburgh team in order to take first place. But they did it! Congratulations to all of them for a job well done! To top it off, in individual awards, Josh placed first and Jenny came in third.
Junior Varsity A was comprised of Daniel De Lige of Auburn, Hazel Woodward of Brewer Calvary Chapel, and Carl Caverly, Zach Blanchard and Maddie Blanchard, all of Little River Baptist. The competition in this division was pretty fierce, as the teams were fairly evenly matched. They finished the round robin in second place. But they were knocked out of the play-offs after losing the first two rounds in a couple heartbreakers, one on the last question, the other on a tie-breaker. Their final placement was 5th. Hazel finished 7th individually, Carl was 9th and Daniel was 12th.
Junior Varsity B was the novice team (first-year quizzers). They were Austin Young of Gardiner Nazarene, Josh Martin and Ian Gundberg of Augusta Nazarene, and Trinity Murphy from the Great Island and West Point Nazarene churches (Windham can also claim her – she gets around). Most of these kids got a late start on the year, and did not have the benefit of a full-time local coach. But they each memorized 2-7 chapters of Acts and did a great job at the competition. They placed 6th overall, and Austin came in 8th individually. I look forward to seeing what these kids do in the future!
The tournament concluded Saturday evening with worship and the award ceremony, but after all their hard work, it was time for some play. Sunday on the way home, the group stopped at Summit Adventures in So. Portland. Bumper cars, human hamster ball, laser tag and more were the perfect “antidote” for all the studying these kids had done. After lunch at the mall, everyone headed home for some well-deserved rest. This great group of kids did an amazing job representing us at the Eastern Field tournament.
